Destination Overview
Munnar was a remote tribal & Malayarayar village in Travancore kingdom until 1877, when John Daniel Munro (British Resident of Travancore) leased the Kanan Devan Hills from the Poonjar royal family and opened the ghat road. The first experimental tea was planted in 1879 by A.H. Sharp, and by the 1890s the Kanan Devan Hills Produce Company (later Tata Tea, now Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Co. — KDHP, India's largest tea producer) ran 30+ estates and a light railway up the hills. The KDHP Tata Tea Museum in Nalluthanni Estate (1936 factory) preserves Munnar's planter legacy.

Best Places to Visit in Munnar
Munnar's sightseeing is a series of concentric loops. The Central Town zone (walkable 3 km) has the Tea Museum, Blossom Park, Pothamedu & old bazaar. The Tea Country Loop (NH 185), Munnar → Mattupetty → Echo Point → Kundala → Top Station (30 km), is the "postcard Munnar" everyone comes for — endless neatly-plucked tea terraces row after row. Marayoor & Chinnar (40–60 km) is the quieter 2nd day loop for sandalwood, star tortoises & Thoovanam waterfalls.

Munnar has a subtropical highland climate (Cwb). It is noticeably cooler and greener than the plains year-round. Rainfall is heavy — ~2,500 mm/year (some places 4,000+ mm). Munnar sits on the windward slope of Western Ghats, so SW Monsoon (Jun-Sep) is dramatic: misty, wet, landslip-prone on outer roads.

How to Reach Munnar
Munnar is reachable via three ghat routes from different directions. None of the routes has a train — the last railway station is 100+ km in the plains. Private A/C cab with an experienced driver is strongly recommended (hairpin bends, narrow roads, unpredictable fog).
