Because Mysuru is largely flat and walkable in the central districts, it is exceptionally senior-friendly and stroller-friendly compared with hill destinations. A private cab is nevertheless strongly recommended for out-of-town excursions such as Chamundi Hills, Brindavan Gardens (KRS), Srirangapatna island, Ranganathittu bird sanctuary and Somnathpura temple, which would otherwise be cumbersome to reach by public bus or auto-rickshaw.

Chamundi Hills & Chamundeshwari Temple
A sacred hill crowned by the Sri Chamundeshwari Devi Temple, the guardian deity of the Mysore royal family. The Dravidian-style gopuram, the 1,000+ stone steps winding up the eastern face, the 5-metre-tall black granite Nandi bull (carved from a single boulder in 1659) halfway up, and the hilltop panorama of Mysuru city at sunrise or dusk make this an essential stop. Drive road takes 25–35 minutes from the palace.
Brindavan Gardens & KRS Dam
Terraced botanical gardens stretching 150 acres below the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam backwaters, laid out under Sir Mirza Ismail’s premiership of Mysore State. Famous for symmetric terrace lawns, topiary, flower beds, the South Gate fountain court and the colourful musical fountain shows in the evening (seasonal, typically from 6:30 PM with 2–3 15-minute shows). Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens (Mysore Zoo)
One of India’s oldest and most well-maintained zoos, spanning 157 acres of tree-shaded enclosures. Home to African lions, Bengal tigers, giraffes, elephants, rhinoceros, chimpanzees, Indian gaurs and the rare and endemic species. Adjacent to Karanji Lake — combine the two for a full morning of family-friendly sightseeing.
Jaganmohan Palace & Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery
An alternative royal residence built in 1861 for the Wodeyar family. Its three wings now house one of South India’s finest art collections: masterpieces by Raja Ravi Varma, Svetoslav Roerich and Mysore-style court painters; antique furniture; the giant “Glorification of Mysore” wedding painting; and a collection of rare musical instruments, clocks and armour.
St. Philomena’s Cathedral
One of India’s tallest and most spectacular Neo-Gothic churches, also called St. Joseph’s Cathedral. The twin spires rise to 175 ft (53 m), modelled on the Cologne Cathedral. Its stained-glass panels, vaulted interior and underground crypt of the patron saint are memorable. Excellent stop after the zoo for architecture lovers.
Srirangapatna Island Fortress
The historic river island capital of Tipu Sultan (Tiger of Mysore) and Hyder Ali. Key sights include: the 18th-century Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (one of the three major Ranganatha temples on the Kaveri, 500+ years old), Daria Daulat Bagh (Tipu’s teakwood Summer Palace with murals of his battles), the Jama Masjid, the Gumbaz mausoleum of Tipu, Hyder Ali and their families, and the battle ramparts where Tipu fell in 1799. Allow 3–4 hours minimum.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
Six tiny islets on a meander of the Kaveri river, designated a sanctuary at the insistence of the renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali. A 25- to 45-minute boat ride (shared or private) brings you within metres of painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, Indian cormorants, open-bill storks, spoonbills, herons, kingfishers, mugger crocodiles and river otters. Best season: November – February (winter migrants).
Karanji Lake & Walk-through Aviary
Home to India’s largest walk-through aviary (60 m × 40 m × 20 m high), with more than 40 species of indigenous and exotic birds in a simulated rainforest habitat. Also includes a butterfly park, children’s play area, pedal boating on the lake, and a nature interpretation centre. Combine with Mysore Zoo next door.
Devaraja Market
A 140+ year-old open-air traditional market spanning the length of Sayyaji Rao Road. Famous for fragrant Mysore mallige (jasmine) garlands, kumkum-turmeric stacks, sandalwood paste, aromatic spices, flower vendors, dry fruits, handcrafts and colourful silk. A photographer’s paradise in the early morning light. Bargain politely.
Mysuru Rail Museum
One of only two regional Indian Railways museums in South India. Displays lovingly preserved vintage metre-gauge and broad-gauge steam locomotives, a wooden Wodeyar royal saloon coach (the pride of the collection), signal equipment, ticket stamps, photographs and model trains. Kids love the small toy train ride.
Somnathpura Chennakeshava Temple
A perfect, little-visited Hoysala-era temple (1268 CE) dedicated to Lord Keshava (Vishnu), entirely covered from plinth to tower with razor-sharp soapstone carvings of the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. Regarded as the most complete surviving Hoysala temple. Combine on the return from Srirangapatna, or make it a half-day add-on.

Pro Tip — Best Balance of Weather, Crowds & Pricing
Choose a Monday–Thursday trip in late November, January, late February or early March. Avoid Dasara and the Christmas/New Year 10-day windows unless explicitly planned. If your priority is the Dasara procession, confirm the dates with Karnataka Tourism’s official Dasara calendar (they shift each year with the lunar calendar).

Mysore Pak
The legendary ghee-soaked sweet made from roasted besan (gram flour), sugar syrup and pure cow’s ghee. Said to have been invented around the 1930s by the royal kitchen of Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV. Available in two styles — crisp and crumbly or fudgy-and-soft. Buy from heritage sweet shops to ensure quality.
Mysore Masala Dosa
A Mysore-ised version of the classic South Indian dosa — the thin rice-batter crepe is slathered inside with a bright red, spicy Mysore chutney / red podi mix (dry red chillies, urad dal, garlic, ginger, onion, vinegar) and then stuffed with the standard potato curry. Served crisp and golden. Uniquely Mysorean — the chutney is not served on the side.
Bisi Bele Bath (Hot Dal Rice)
A hearty one-pot rice-and-lentil dish strongly associated with old Mysore. Rice, toor dal and vegetables are cooked together with Bisi Bele Bath powder (a proprietary sambar-style masala blend), tamarind, tomatoes, chillies and ghee. Topped with crispy cashews, roasted curry leaves and a generous scoop of ghee. Comfort food at its best.
Ragi Mudde (Finger Millet Balls)
The rustic staple grain dish of Mysore and surrounding southern Karnataka districts. Nachni / finger millet flour is mixed with boiling water and rolled into fist-sized balls, then eaten dipped in saaru (rasam-like broth), eggplant curry or a non-veg chicken/naati kolumbu. High in protein and iron; the original “slow-carb” Deccan farmer’s meal.
Rava Idli & Ghee Roast Tiffin
Steamed semolina cakes with cashews, pepper, cumin and curry leaves — a lighter, softer alternative to rice idlis, often credited in origin to Mysuru and Bangalore’s legendary Mavalli Tiffin Room culture.
