Destination Overview
The name Kodaikanal derives from the Tamil words kodai (gift) and kanal (forest), meaning the "Gift of the Forest". Unlike Ooty's Nilgiris, Kodaikanal sits in the southern arm of the Western Ghats (Palani Hills), closer to the banana and cardamom plains of Theni and Madurai. Its climate is milder and marginally warmer than Ooty, making it pleasant nine months of the year.
The modern town was formally settled from 1845 onward by American Madura Missionaries (including Rev. David Coaker — after whom Coaker's Walk is named) and British civil servants from Madurai Presidency. They laid out the 60-acre Kodaikanal Lake (completed 1863), planted first pine and eucalyptus plantations, and built the first churches, schools and bungalows that still define the town's charm.
Kodaikanal town spreads along ridges around the lake. Most sightseeing is either inside a 5-km radius of the lake or on the 32-km Loop Road that circles the upper plateau — offering valley viewpoints, shola-grassland patches and access to Berijam Lake (permit only). For first-time visitors from Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal is often the "softer" and more drivable introduction to South Indian hill stations.

How to Reach Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal is accessible by a well-engineered ghat road (NH 183) with 22 hairpin bends from Palani. There is no direct rail-head atop the hill. The most recommended way from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode or Salem is to book a dedicated private cab — scenic stopovers, drop-directly-to-hotel, and no parking hassle.
