Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, is the most famous hill station in Tamil Nadu and the headquarters of the Nilgiris district. Ooty Lake & Boat House
Artificial lake constructed in 1824 by John Sullivan, spread over 65 acres. Pedal, row and motorboat rides available. Surrounded by eucalyptus trees, with pony rides, a mini train and amusement park nearby. Open all days.
Government Botanical Garden
55-acre terraced garden laid out in 1848 with over 650 plant species, a 20-million-year-old fossil tree trunk, Italian garden section, Toda hill and seasonal flower shows (May). A 2–3 hour visit is recommended.
Doddabetta Peak
At 2,637 m, the highest peak in the Nilgiris and Tamil Nadu. Telescope house at the summit offers panoramic valley views. Around 9 km from town; arrive before 7 AM for mist-free vistas and fewer crowds.
Government Rose Garden
One of India’s largest rose gardens with more than 20,000 varieties across terraced slopes. Best blooms April–May. Entrance is modest; allow 1–1.5 hours. Valley-view benches make for a quiet mid-morning stop.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO)
World Heritage metre-gauge rack railway running 46 km from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor. Built in the early 1900s; the 5–6 hr ride crosses arched bridges and tunnels. Book online well in advance; our cab handles transfer & station drops.
Tea Estates & Tea Factory
The Nilgiris produce India’s characteristic dark, aromatic tea. Walk through plantation rows, learn withering, rolling, oxidation and drying at a local factory, and carry home freshly packed Nilgiri tea. Doddabetta road and Coonoor route have several estates.
Pine Forest & Shooting Spots

Pykara Lake & Falls
Around 20 km from Ooty on the Mysuru road. Calm reservoir with boating, followed by a scenic short walk to the multi-tiered Pykara falls. Best post-monsoon; combine with a Mysuru-bound or onward trip.
Emerald & Avalanche Lakes
Two serene water bodies 20–25 km beyond town, surrounded by tea gardens and the Silent Valley sholas. Avalanche requires a forest permit and is ideal for trout fishing, trekking and birdwatching. Avalanche entry around ₹150 (approx.).
St. Stephen’s Church
One of the oldest churches in the Nilgiris, consecrated in 1830. Features fine stained-glass panels, colonial-era architecture and a Sunday congregation. Near the Ooty post office; no entry fee, photography restrictions inside.
Thread Garden & Wax Museum
Thread Garden displays intricate hand-crafted artificial flowers made without stitching or needles. The Wax World museum showcases life-size wax statues of Indian leaders and personalities. Both are close to the lake and good for families.
Deer Park & Mudumalai Tiger Reserve
Deer Park on Ooty Lake’s edge is an easy wildlife stop for kids. For serious safaris, extend your trip by 1–2 days to Mudumalai (around 65 km from Ooty, toward the Karnataka border) to spot tigers, elephants, gaurs and leopards.

For the ideal balance of good weather, uncrowded roads and reasonable hotel pricing, plan a Monday–Thursday trip in March, June, October or early November. Avoid the 10-day window around Christmas, Tamil New Year and May school holidays unless you have confirmed bookings.

TNSTC / Municipal Buses

Ooty Travel Tips
- Book your cab early (7–30 days before peak dates: Apr–May, Dasara, Diwali, Christmas, New Year, Pongal, Tamil New Year). Cabs become scarce and surcharge pricing kicks in during festival weeks.
- Carry woollens and rainwear regardless of season. Even in May, Doddabetta at 7 AM can feel like 12–13°C with wind.
- Ooty banned single-use plastic carry bags years ago. Bring a jute/cloth bag for shopping, or use the paper bags provided by shops.
- Altitude change: Some visitors (especially those with sinus issues, the elderly and infants) may feel a mild headache or breathlessness. Rest and hydration usually resolve this within a few hours.
- Avoid night driving on the ghats between Mettupalayam and Ooty after 9:30 PM — mist + oncoming truck headlights reduce visibility sharply.

- Nilgiri Mountain Railway tickets sell out 30–60 days ahead during school vacations — plan accordingly. A booking ID is required at boarding.
