Yercaud is a laid-back, less-commercialised hill station perched on a high, flat plateau in the Shevaroy Hills (also spelt Shevaroyan) of the Eastern Ghats in Salem district, Tamil Nadu. It sits at an altitude of 1,515 metres (4,970 ft) above sea level, and the highest point in the range — the Shevaroyan Temple hill — reaches 1,628 m (5,341 ft). According to the 2011 Census, the hill town itself has a compact population of around 11,500, which keeps it quiet and pleasantly unhurried compared with the much busier Nilgiri hill stations further south.

Yercaud has a unique distinction among the hill stations covered on this site: it is the only one in the Eastern Ghats, while Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munnar, Coorg and (to a lesser extent) Yercaud's neighbour Kolli Hills belong to the Western Ghats chain. This gives it a drier, sunnier, warmer highland climate with temperature never dropping below about 10°C — making it a genuinely year-round destination, even in peak winter. This is the reason the British used Yercaud as a retreat for officers and missionaries from Madras Presidency from the early 1800s, building bungalows, churches, schools and the famous 32 km Loop Road that circles the main plateau.
The nickname "Jewel of the South" comes from the vivid contrast of deep-green coffee/pepper/cardamom plantations dotted with orange groves (sweet Yercaud oranges are famous across Tamil Nadu), silver-oak windbreaks, eucalyptus belts and the bright turquoise Yercaud Lake at the centre of the town. A private cab with driver is the most hassle-free way to see Yercaud — not only for the Coimbatore-to-Salem interstate leg, but also because the 32 km Loop Road and the Kiliyur Falls access road are difficult by public transport, and because most visitors combine Yercaud with a half-day/full-day side trip to Hogenakkal Falls (the “Niagara of South India”, 120 km) or to Kolli Hills with its legendary 70 hairpin bends (110 km).

Yercaud’s attractions are a relaxed mix of viewpoints, gardens, waterfalls, hill temples and plantation walks. Unlike busier hill stations, distances between most sights are short and crowds are manageable even on holiday weekends.
Yercaud Lake (Emerald Lake)
A 35-acre artificial boating lake in the heart of Yercaud, surrounded by landscaped gardens, a walking promenade, deer park, colourful pedal boats and rowboats for hire. Gentle, slow-paced and flat — perfect for a relaxed morning or evening with kids and elders. Pony rides, a small amusement zone and snack vendors are next to Anna Park.
Lady’s Seat Viewpoint
Probably Yercaud’s most photographed viewpoint — a rocky outcrop with Sterling’s Seat, Gent’s Seat and Children’s Seat nearby, all offering long-distance southern views of the plains down to Mettur Dam and Salem city lights at night. A coin-operated high-powered telescope lets you zoom into Salem city, nearby towns and distant ghat ridges. After sunset is atmospheric.
Pagoda Point (Pyramid Point)
A grassy ridge-top viewpoint where four stone pagoda/pyramid-shaped piles of stacked rocks (built by earlier British visitors, now maintained) mark the directions. An ancient small Rama temple is 2 minutes away on foot. A 180-degree panoramic view of the Shevaroys’ northern valleys and Salem plains, excellent for sunrise photography. Less crowded than Lady’s Seat.
Shevaroyan Temple Hill (1,628 m)
The highest point in the Shevaroy range (1,628 m / 5,341 ft), crowned by a temple dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan — the guardian deity of the hills. Surrounded by a maze-like stone labyrinth of passages that devotees walk through; steps up to the temple ridge are a short, steep but enjoyable climb. 360-degree views of the Eastern Ghats and the plains of the Cauvery basin.
Anna Park & Botanical / Rose Garden
Named after former TN Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, this well-tended public park next to the lake has a mini Japanese garden, rose beds, cactus and succulent sections, fountains, a children’s play area, a deer enclosure and seasonal flower displays. Combine with a morning lake visit; perfect for families looking for a flat, stroller-friendly location.
Kiliyur Falls (300 ft / 91.5 m)
Yercaud’s signature natural wonder — a 91.5-metre (300-foot) single-drop waterfall set in a verdant valley forest. Most dramatic immediately after monsoon (October through January); it reduces to a thin trickle by March/April and is dry by summer. A well-built stepped pathway of 200+ steps leads down to a rocky pool at the base (not safe for swimming). Combined drive with the Loop Road.
Bear’s Cave (Norton Bungalow Grounds)
A natural underground limestone cave set within the wooded grounds of the heritage Norton Bungalow (one of the oldest British bungalows in Yercaud). Local legend says bears sheltered in the cave centuries ago. A narrow, torch-lit guided walk takes you in 30–40 m inside. Kids love the novelty; not suitable for large people or claustrophobia.
Peel Park / Peeku Park
A small, calm, pretty lake-and-park complex popular with families — pedal-boating on a much smaller and quieter inner lake, tree-shaded lawns, a mini zoo, and cactus gardens. Excellent option if the main Yercaud Lake area feels crowded on a weekend. Cheap to enter and very safe for small children.
Sri Chakra Mahameru Temple (Sri Yantra)
A hill-top Hindu temple famed for its giant, three-dimensional, 5.5-metre-tall Sri Chakra / Sri Yantra meru carved in marble — one of very few open-air installations of this sacred geometric form. Devotees believe circumambulating it brings blessings. Panoramic hill views and a quiet atmosphere.
Tipperary Viewpoint & Karadiyur Point
Two quiet, lesser-visited viewpoints along the 32 km Loop Road. Tipperary is a south-facing stop above coffee plantations; Karadiyur is one of the best sunrise and sunset points in Yercaud. Both are usually completely empty except for local cattle and a couple of fruit vendors — ideal for slow landscape photography.
Malayali Tribal Villages (via Loop Road)
The original inhabitants of the Shevaroys are the Malayali (hill Malayalam-speaking) adivasi community, distinct from the Todas of the Nilgiris and the Kodavas of Coorg. Several small villages along the 32 km Loop Road sell home-grown oranges, pepper, honey, coffee and woven mats. Visit only during daylight, ask before photographing people and never give sweets to children without asking parents.
Coffee, Orange & Spice Plantation Walks
Mixed coffee (robusta) + black pepper + cardamom + cloves plantations cover most of the Yercaud plateau. Auto-Rickshaws & Two-Wheeler Hire
Auto-rickshaws congregate at the bus stand near the lake; fares are negotiated per trip or per half-day/full-day (no meters). Good for short point-to-point hops between lake, Lady’s Seat, Anna Park and market, but expensive for the 32 km Loop Road.
Bikes and scooters are available for rent near the lake for under ₹ 500/day — popular with young backpackers. An international or Indian driving licence is mandatory. Helmets are strongly advised on the Loop Road (occasional stray cattle).
TNSTC Hill Buses (Budget)
Government-operated TNSTC buses run from the Yercaud bus stand to Salem foothill (every 45–60 minutes) and around a few points on the Loop Road. Very cheap, safe, but infrequent — you will wait at stops for 30–60 minutes between departures. Good for solo budget travellers with time, not for families/seniors.
Special buses run on festival days and during summer holidays.
On Foot — Central Yercaud
The town centre cluster (Yercaud Lake, Anna Park, Peel Park, shops, the main market, and most mid-range hotels) is small, flat, tree-shaded and very walkable — a complete circuit of the lake’s promenade is 3 km.
For keen walkers, stretches of the 32 km Loop Road (e.g. 4 km segments around Karadiyur and Tipperary) are great, but walk only in a group and before 5 PM as road shoulders are narrow in places.

Yercaud / Shevaroyan Signature Foods & Produce
Yercaud Oranges (Shevaroys Orange)
The most famous local produce of the Shevaroys — smaller, thinner-skinned, tangy-sweet oranges with a bright deep-orange colour. Planted on sunny upper slopes, harvested from December through April. Sold in nets by village women along the 32 km Loop Road and near the bus stand. Taste far juicier than regular market-grade oranges from the plains. Pick firm, heavy fruit.
Yercaud Filter Coffee (Robusta Hill Grown)
The Shevaroys grow a darker, richer robusta coffee (unlike the Nilgiris which lean more to arabica blends). Locally hand-roasted and hand-ground, sold by plantations and Loop Road farm stalls in unbranded, airtight packets. Brewed South-Indian filter style with no chicory — strong, dark, bitter-chocolatey finish. Perfect after a cold misty morning.
Shevaroy Wild Honey (Multifloral + Stingless Bee)
Honey from apiculture boxes placed inside Yercaud’s coffee+silver-oak forests, and from wild rock-bee hives. Two popular varieties: multifloral golden honey (lighter, tea-friendly) and dark stingless-bee / cheruthen honey (thicker, tangy, traditionally prized for medicinal properties). Buy from signed farm shops to avoid adulterated products.
Tamil Vegetarian Thaali Meals (Home-Style)
Most homestays and mid-range resorts serve a standard Tamil banana-leaf or stainless-steel thaali of steamed rice, sambar, rasam, kootu, dry vegetable poriyal (green bean, raw banana or carrot-beans), curd rice, appalam (papad), pickle and a small sweet. Simple, low-oil and filling — exactly what you want after a morning of walking or the Kiliyur steps.
Idli, Vada, Dosa & Pongal (Breakfast Staples)
Tamil Nadu’s iconic breakfasts are done particularly well in Yercaud hill-town cafes, because the altitude gives the steamed dishes a softer, fluffier crumb. Ghee-roast paper dosa, medu vada, mini-idli with sambar, vegetable pongal and Uttapam are available from 7 AM onwards at most restaurants. Filter coffee is always part of the set.

For non-vegetarian travellers, the better Yercaud resorts and the Salem-side foothill restaurants serve excellent Chettinad-style country chicken curry, mutton kulambu, pepper chicken fry, grilled fish and standard biryanis. Chettinad food is spicy (black pepper, cinnamon, star anise, bay leaf) — ask for “less spicy” if needed.
Homemade Chips & Spice Powders
Roadside women near the 32 km Loop Road and the ghat check-post sell home-fried banana chips, jackfruit chips, tapioca (cassava) chips and sweet potato chips in paper packets. Also look for locally blended sambar powder, rasam powder, and Yercaud black pepper (grown extensively as a intercrop with coffee). Pepper here is small-kerneled and very aromatic.

Money, Payments & Network
UPI works at most mid-sized shops and hotels in Yercaud town, but carry ₹ 2,000–3,000 in cash for Loop Road village stalls, small parking lots, tribal weavers, bearers at the Kiliyur Falls parking, and foothill fruit sellers. 4G/LTE is available on most networks in the town centre but is patchy in the middle of the 32 km Loop Road — download offline Google Maps before you drive the loop. A few SBI/Canara ATMs near the lake work.
Mist, Hairpin Bends & Driving
Heavy mist often blankets the entire Yercaud plateau from 6 PM to 10 AM in winter. If arriving late, book a driver who already knows the 20 hairpin bends rather than self-driving after 8 PM. Never overtake on the ghat. Keep headlights dipped in mist. Use first gear for descents so you don’t overheat the brake pads. Take a 2-minute brake-cooling stop at the Yercaud check-post on the way down.
